About Covington Court

The Covington Historic District is a preserved area that reflects the town’s architectural and cultural heritage from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The South Main Historic District includes Main and Maple Streets, lined with Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman bungalow homes shaded by mature trees. The Tipton County Courthouse, built in the 1890s, anchors the courthouse square, which is surrounded by well-preserved commercial buildings.
The South College Street Historic District covers the 600 to 800 blocks of South College Street and includes about two acres with 17 contributing structures. These range from Queen Anne and Colonial Revival houses to American Foursquare and Craftsman bungalows. Notable homes include Captain Charles B. Simonton’s post–Civil War residence, the Philip Austin Fisher House, the Hall-Roy Boyd House, and the R. K. Castellaw House.
Prominent historic structures in downtown Covington include the Hotel Lindo, built in 1901 with Italianate and Romanesque influences, the Tipton County Museum and Veterans Memorial, the 1916 Canaan Baptist Church, the restored Ruffin Theatre from the 1930s, St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Gothic Revival style, and the former Coca-Cola Bottling Plant, an Art Deco landmark.
Covington has been designated a Tennessee Main Street Community, which promotes preservation, adaptive reuse, and downtown revitalization. The city also maintains historic district zoning guidelines to ensure that changes respect the area’s character. Together, these efforts preserve the charm of Covington’s shaded residential streets, landmark churches, distinctive commercial buildings, and cultural institutions, keeping its history alive for future generations.
